Traditional Platinum Solders have been made for generations and were formulated in response to a shortage of platinum on the market during World War II. Palladium was used as the primary metal instead of Platinum as Palladium at the time was cheaper and available. Traditional Platinum solders contain little to no Platinum, using Palladium, Gold, Silver and sometimes Nickel instead. Jewelers have gotten use to using them as they flow nicely, are relatively easy to use and somewhat match Platinum for color. Things have changed over the years and now Palladium is more expensive than it once was and Gold is more expensive than Platinum, so there is no real price advantage to these formulas when compared to the Platinum plumb solders that are now available (see below). One advantage that these traditional platinum solders still have is that they are available in temperatures below 1300 Centigrade. Because these solders contain so much Palladium, they are easy to use with Palladium.
