Product Details

The Orca MP99 torch is a compact, portable and refillable butane torch similar to other refillable butane torches but better as it shares the same precision gas flow regulator and air mixture control found on the more expensive EZ torch.  You get a wider range of operating temperatures and flame sizes and far better quality components compared to other types of refillable hand torches.

The Orca MP99 includes one small tip, part number 114.252.  This is the same small tip as used on the EZ Torch.  The medium 114.253 and larger 114.254 EZ Torch tips can also be used on the Orca MP99 and are available separately, see below.

Instructions

The torch is sold empty without fuel.  You will need to purchase separately a pressurized butane fuel source, like Bernzomatic Butane Fuel.  See our number 114.214. Butane fuel is available online or at hardware stores and many other outlets.  Always make sure torch is empty of fuel before re-fueling.

CAUTION: Butane fuel is flammable. Fueling must be done in a well-ventilated area away from any open flames.

The first time you filled the empty torch follow these steps:

  1. Make sure the gas regulator knob is fully closed by turning the knob clockwise until it stops.
  2. Fill the torch with both the torch and the butane fuel turned upside down in the vertical position. The Torch head/tip on bottom so torch fueling valve is showing, the butane fuel on top with the fill nozzle facing down.
  3. Seat the nozzle of the butane fuel in the torch fueling valve and press the butane fuel canister down so that the torch fueling valve opens to accept the pressurized butane fuel.
  4. Do not fill for longer than 30 seconds.
  5. Separate the butane fuel from the torch.
  6. Place the torch upright and let the torch sit for 1 to 5 minutes to allow the gas to stabilize before lighting the torch.

CAUTION: If gas is sputtering out of the torch fill hole there is too much pressurized fuel inside the torch canister.  Slowly open the gas regulator knob and release excess fuel until the sputtering stops. If there is any overspill at the torch fueling valve wipe it off with a cloth. Dispose of any cloth used for wiping away butane fuel residue properly as cloth is now flammable.

CAUTION: Do not attempt to light torch with gas is sputtering or there is any fuel residue on the outside of the torch.

CAUTION: Do not touch the burner while it is hot

CAUTION: Do not leave the torch in the sun.  Do not store or operate in conditions where the temperature exceeds 105 degrees F (40 degrees C).

Lighting & Using the Torch

  • Make sure that the atmospheric air regulator adjuster is in its fully closed position.  It is fully closed when the air holes are no longer visible.
  • Open the gas regulator knob about half a turn. No need to open completely, which would be about 2-1/2 turns.  As soon as you notice the sound of the gas escaping from the torch tip, light the torch using a match, a lighter or a torch sparker.
  • Once ignited, use the atmospheric air regulator adjuster to add air to the fuel mixture and use the gas regulator knob to add more fuel as needed.
  • A wide variety of flame sizes are available by adjusting both controls to achieve your desired intensity.
  • Optimum fuel economy is with a 1” (25mm) flame.
  • A blue flame is hotter.
  • To extinguish the flame, close the gas regulator knob.
  • Make sure the gas regulator knob is closed when not in use

Refilling Torch After Initial Filling

Make sure torch is empty before filling.  Run the torch completely down.  Then open the gas regulator knob to disperse remaining fuel.

  • Make sure the gas regulator knob is fully closed by turning the knob clockwise until it stops.
  • Fill the torch with both the torch and the butane fuel turned upside down in the vertical position. The Torch head/tip on bottom so torch fueling valve is showing, the butane fuel on top with the fill nozzle facing down.
  • Seat the nozzle of the butane fuel in the torch fueling valve and press the butane fuel canister down so that the torch fueling valve opens to accept the pressurized butane fuel.
  • Do not fill for longer than 30 seconds.
  • Separate the butane fuel from the torch.
  • Place the torch upright and let the torch sit for 1 to 5 minutes to allow the gas to stabilize before lighting the torch.
