Jewelers have relied on Emery paper as an abrasive because of Emery's unique characteristic of constant uniform grain structure. Emery paper will give a reliable, consistent finish with a minimum of microscopic high spots that can cause deeper scratches than anticipated. Emerundum, a naturally occurring odorless mineral, is widely utilized as an abrasive in polishing applications. This mineral is composed of a mixture of corundum (aluminum oxide) combined with an iron-bearing mineral and various trace impurities, including mullite, titania, silica, and magnesia.
