Compact chasing & repoussé starter kit. This set combines a mini cast iron pitch bowl, the matching rubber pad, and 5 lb of Nechamkin Medium Green Pitch (organic pine rosin–based, Made in USA). The medium-green pitch softens with gentle heat for forming and firms up for crisper chasing and light planishing.

Why This Kit

  • Ready to work: Correct bowl + pad + quality pitch—no guesswork.
  • Tunable support: Keep pitch slightly warmer for deeper repoussé; a bit cooler for firmer, crisper chasing.
  • Natural “real” pitch: Pine rosin–based (not asphaltum); grips when cool, softens evenly when warmed.

Set-Up Tips (from the attached PDF)

  • Weight the bowl base with concrete for stability and to conserve pitch. Before the concrete sets, press a few finger depressions into it so the pitch can key in securely. (See attached PDF: Setting Up a Pitch Bowl.)
  • Break pitch into small chunks and warm gradually—many shops use a 250–300 °F oven for even softening. A hot-air gun also works; keep the heat moving to avoid hotspots. (See attached PDF.)

Use & Care

  1. Warm the pitch until the surface is pliable; seat the work and allow to cool until firm before striking.
  2. To release, re-warm slightly and lift the piece; wipe residues while warm and finish clean-up per your studio practice.
  3. Nechamkin Green Pitch is a natural product; minor batch-to-batch variations in color/firmness are normal.

Good Practice & Safety (Silversmithing.com)

  • A good pine-resin pitch should grip when cool, soften through (not just on the surface), and never be heated to the point of bubbling or smoke. Always wear eye protection and ensure ventilation. See Charles Lewton-Brain’s Silversmiths Pitch Review for an expert overview.
