American pattern draw plates are based on shapes and sizes first made in the USA in the 19th century.  These American made drawplates were once so popular that they set the standard for drawplates around the world. The factories that produced are long forgotten, but the pattern, with the alphabetic identifications, (A-B-V and so on) survived.  For many years these American pattern drawplates were made in France, but French made drawplates disappeared from the market well before the end of the 20th century.  These so call American pattern drawplates still survive as Italian made drawplates with much improved metric calibrated precision.
