Coral is an organic gem, composed of the external skeletons of coral polyps. Coral is made of calcium carbonate, with no crystal structure and is commonly shaped into beads, carvings, cameos and cabochons. The use of coral in jewelry dates back over 30,000 years since prehistoric times and continues to be in high demand, though supply is limited due to pollution and environmental protection. Due to softness, coral should be worn with care and chemicals, heat and abrasion should be avoided. Clean with warm, soapy water. Avoid use of ultrasonic and steam cleaner.
